Introducing Bryn 1899 Ale
What do you do when you have a historic moment in the club’s history, one that involves a club stalwart and a police dog called Bryn? You make a beer of course!
Torquay United AFC have secured the help of Teignmouth-based brewers Red Rock, who kindly invited former Gull Jim McNichol along to make his own signature brew named after Bryn (Bryn 1899 Ale).
Police dog Bryn, of course, has gone down in United folklore.
Needing a draw in the final game of the 1986/87 season to escape an exit from the Football League, United were trailing 2-1 against Crewe in the dying minutes, only for Bryn to halt proceedings when he took a bite out of right-back McNichol’s thigh.
The resultant four minutes of injury time enabled United to pile on the pressure, paving the way for Paul Dobson to capitalise on a Crewe mistake to level the scores and save the club from relegation on goal difference!
With the club now in 2020 better shape than it has been for many years on and off the field. Maybe Torquay United’s loyal band of supporters can finally look ahead to the future with optimism once again.
