Urlar, Gaelic for ‘The Earth”. We have great respect for the land. Afterall, it’s the foundation of our business and it is why we have chosen to take the biodynamic approach to the way we tend our land and make our wine. It’s all about restoring balance to the earth and nature. The result is outstanding single wines that capture the purity and the flavour inherent in the land. Hailing from Scotland, Angus Thomson is a 5th generation farmer, descending from a family of distillers. He and his wife simply fell in love with New Zealand and so packed up their three young children to put down roots here. Loving the beautiful stony soils of Gladstone in the Wairarapa, they quickly turned their dreams into reality with the help of renowned winemaker and viticulturist, Guy McMaster. Economic and environment sustainability are their driving principals. Giving life back to the soil and managing the vineyard as a balanced sustainable farming unit. This includes organic practices such as recycling through composts and liquid manures and increasing plant bio diversity through inter-row crops. Our own Highland cow herd provide the manure to drive the composting process. Using the biodynamic farming and gardening calendar, the rhythmic influences of the sun, moon, planets and stars are recognised and worked where possible. We are passionate believers in sustainability. Our purpose-built winery has won both design and sustainability awards for its sheer brilliance. The result of this commitment and passion is beautiful, clean, hand crafted wines that have not impacted negatively on the soils as they have been created.

A zesty gooseberry, passion fruit, and citrus flavours with a hint of capsicum. While it remains a distinctively New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc the palate provides a wine full of varietal fruit expression balanced with texture and weight. A multi-dimensional wine.
